Swimming Pool Problems

Swimming pool problems are normally the result of poor water circulation or a lack or proper regular maintenance. We have listed here the most common problems.

Green Algae.

Cloudy water or dark green or black patches on pool walls of the pool. Algae is not only unsightly, but it makes surfaces slippery. Algae can clog pumps and filters, and may contain bacteria caused by one of the following.

  • Insufficient Free Chlorine residual
  • Not following regular pool maintenance, including testing and sanitising
Remedy
  •  Super-Chlorinate
  • Check pH and adjust, if necessary, to pH 7.2 – 7.8
  • Brush spots to remove clinging algae
  • Maintain a consistent level of 1.0 – 1.5 ppm Free Chlorine

Cloudy water.

Water appears murky due to suspended matter caused by one of the following.

  •  Calcium level too high
  • Back washing too frequently
  • Inefficient filter
  • Plugged or channeled filter
  • Precipitating calcium compounds
  • Incorrect pH levels
  • Incorrect Total Alkalinity
  • Too high TDS (total dissolved solids) content
Remedy
  •  Inspect filtration system
  • Adjust and maintain the pH, Total Alkalinity and Free Chlorine to proper levels
  • Maintain a consistent level of 1.0 – 1.5 ppm Free Chlorine

Eye burns and Chlorine-like odors caused by one of the following.

  •  Improper pH
  • Total Chlorine too high
 Remedy
  •  Super-Chlorinate
  • Adjust pH to proper 7.2 – 7.8 range
  • Adjust and maintain the pH, Total Alkalinity and Free Chlorine to proper levels

Stains.

Usually brownish stains on pool surface caused by one of the following.

  • Corrosion of pools metal hardware due to low pH
  • High pH
  • High Alkalinity
  • Dissolved metals
Remedy
  •  Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8
  • Adjust Total Alkalinity

Clogged Filter.

Water flow through your filter is impeded, resulting in increase in circulatory system pressure caused by one of the following.

  •  Algae
  • Calcification
  • Hair
  • Suntan lotion
  • Improper pH
  • Improper Total Alkalinity
Remedy
  • Adjust and maintain the pH, Total Alkalinity and Free Chlorine to proper levels
  • Perform filter maintenance and change sand if needed

Foaming.

When your pool water looks like soap bubbles caused by one of the following.

  •  Too high a concentration of algaecide
  • Organic debris in water
Remedy
  • Read product labels carefully, and obey dosage instructions
  • Discard water, as necessary
  • Super-Chlorinate
  • Adjust pH
  • Total Alkalinity  and Free Chlorine residual to proper ranges
  • Maintain those proper levels

Scale.

White, grey, or brownish deposits on pool walls and floor caused by one of the following.

  • Calcium Carbonate deposits caused by excessively hard water
  • Accumulation of dissolved solids
Remedy
  • Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8
  • Adjust Total Alkalinity

Colored Water

Water in a NEWLY filled pool turns blue, brown, or black when first treated chemically caused by the following.

  •  Chlorine turns unseen copper, iron, or manganese in the water into unwanted and highly visible compounds
Remedy
  • Adjust pH to 7.2 – 7.8Run filter continuously and backwash as required
  • Vacuum settled material to waste
  • Ask your authorised pool dealer about use of alum for faster cleanup results
