Solar Heating for Swimming Pools

In solar heating systems the pool water circulates through a large heat mat or panel depending on your system, usually located on your roof, and absorbs the suns energy. The principle is similar to the way your a car radiator works, only these solar heat exchangers collect heat instead of radiating it. Most solar systems are flat black panels manufactured from high technology plastics which have been designed to resist weather and ultraviolet radiation or thin black tubes laid out as solar mats, the mats are the cheaper option.

The major advantage of these systems is that because sunshine is free they have no operating costs. They are environmentally friendly as solar energy is renewable and nonpolluting. The major disadvantage is that solar does not provide heat on demand so in the colder winter months in Lanzarote it is difficult to maintain high temperatures. You cannot make more solar energy the way you might use more electricity to maintain your pool temperature. A heating system used in conjunction with a swimming pool cover is the best way of keeping the pool at a constant temperature.

Always use a swimming pool cover

Use a swimming pool cover in conjunction with your solar heating system as most pool heat is lost at night when the temperature drops considerably or from the cold wind hitting the water surface, so keep the cover on when the swimming pool is not in use.
