The Lanzarote climate is fairly consistent throughout the year with very little rain and temperatures not falling below 25 ºC in the summer months and 16 ºC during the winter, averaging a very pleasant 22 ºC. The summer sees temperatures up to the low 30s and the average yearly rainfall is only 16 days.
These year round constant temperatures are due mainly to the North-East Trade Winds and the Canary Current.
The North-East Trade Winds are cool winds that arrive during the summer months and are responsible for keeping the temperature from rising too high. They are caused by hot air currents rising high over the equator then cooling and lowering before they reach Lanzarote. These winds are at their most frequent during the month of July.
The waters of the Canary Islands are kept at between 18 ºC in the winter and 23 ºC in the summer months by the Canary Current which brings with it cool water from the depths as it flows past the islands.
The summer can however, see some very hot weather of up to 40 ºC when Lanzarote experiences hot winds from the Sahara desert. This ‘sirocco’ or ‘calima’ brings with it hot, dry air and sand and can last from a few hours to a week, but these generally only occur a few times during the summer.
The temperatures can vary throughout the island with the north being on average a little cloudier and cooler than the south which can enjoy up to 2500 hours of sunshine a year.
